Darmstadt 2017

In order to restore the lost dignity of the Via Triumphalis, the design accentuates the visual relationship to the forty-metre-high Ludewig monument and the palace as you drive into the city. The grand ducal character of the city was lost in the 1950s and the city was sacrificed to traffic.

With two striking luminaires, the design cites the demolished Rhine Gate, visible from afar even to today's drivers. The fourteen-metre-high objects frame the "Lange Lui" and bring the defining axis through the city back to life.

The fence in front of the Kunsthalle will be removed and replaced by a curved bench. As well as providing seating, it protects the open area from parked cars. The little-used entrance hall will be converted into a café with lounge, the forecourt into a summer garden with self-service.
