Daheim bei den drei Steubern- traditional restaurant in Sachsenhausen
The spirit of the place: the owner of the cider restaurant Wolfgang Wagner died three years ago, leaving the pub in the 140-year-old corner building on Klappergasse/Dreieichstraße empty for several years. During the first inspection, the following picture emerged inside: rustic furnishings from 1970, traces of cigarette smoke on the walls, the cold kitchen above the hallway. A hatch to the hallway ensured that the private club of old friends could enjoy a cigarette in the stairwell.
The owner: Gerhard Stephan, nephew of the previous owner, is planning careful and technically necessary changes with my office; it was agreed to remove retrofitted fixtures from the 1970s and restore the structure from 1888. An impressive steel girder with a 'cove' appears above the wooden profiled ceiling. The cold kitchen above the corridor is replaced by toilet facilities, and the catering kitchen is installed in the former courtyard entrance. Various cool boxes, barrel coolers and the necessary technology are placed in the two basement floors.
Interior architecture: The authentic wooden furnishings with long and narrow tables and benches, the wooden panels on the walls and the typical wooden checkroom rails are simply cleaned and reinstalled with their patina. The result is a clear space that is barely visible and is supplied with the energy and fire protection technology required today. The living room atmosphere with Wagner's collection of historical engravings and photos, cider jugs and books on the shelves were created by the tenant couple. The graffiti-covered façade is being whitewashed, the crumbling sandstone repaired and graffiti-protected, which is absolutely essential in this area.
The tenant couple Pia and Frank Winkler, who already run three Sachsenhausen pubs in 2024, are won over for "Daheim bei den drei Steubern".
The interior design transforms the clear space into a living room. Carpets, cushions, doilies and lamps, a collection of historical engravings and photos, cider jugs and books on the shelves create a cozy atmosphere: the tenants' trademark is a homely restaurant where guests enjoy cider by location and vintage together with Frankfurt fare. Shortly after opening in August 2024, the place with a guest garden in the inner courtyard is already very popular, and not just with the people of Frankfurt.
